AND ITS DANGERS |
| Asbestos is a naturally
occurring mineral. For decades, asbestos was used in countless
products, and a wide range of workers came in contact with
deadly asbestos dust. |
| Since
the early 1900's, asbestos manufacturing companies, the companies
who used asbestos, and their insurance companies have known
that asbestos posed a deadly hazard. In the 1930's studies
demonstrated that exposure to asbestos dust could be life-threatening.
Moreover, the asbestos companies funded secret studies that

| In the 1970s, the
United States government created the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA recognized
that asbestos exposure caused serious health problems including
asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. It also enacted
regulations designed to protect American workers. However,
even after the government imposed regulations, many companies
continued to expose their workers to asbestos and failed
to adequately warn or protect those workers. Indeed, today
doctors are diagnosing asbestos, lung cancer and mesothelioma
in individuals who were exposed to asbestos in the 1970's. |

as asbestos use was being reduced, however, countless numbers
of people continued to be exposed to asbestos-containing
products. Indeed, many products containing asbestos continued
to be sold and used. Because asbestos was so widely used,

| Mesothelioma
is a rare cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs,
abdomen or heart. Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure.
Mesothelioma can strike people who have been exposed to
small amounts of asbestos for even short periods of time.
In most cases, mesothelioma does not develop until 20 to
50 years after the exposure to asbestos. |
